" Music is the ultimate narcotic "

I hope you'll drop by often and share some of the different things you will find here. I was very fortunate to spend almost 50 years in broadcasting doing what I always wanted to do and I spent most of it in San Francisco working for radio stations owned by NBC, CBS, Metromedia, Malrite, and Crowell-Collier. Some of these call letters are legend such as KEWB, KNBR, KCBS, and KNEW. During this period, I got to do a lot of different things.

When I first went on the air in my hometown of Asheville, North Carolina, it was 1955. I was a senior in High School and the sweet pop of the early 50's was being swept away by rock 'n' roll. Elvis and Bill Haley were revolutionizing music and it would never be the same. The 45 RPM was fairly new and here came these yellow records from Memphis with "That's Alright, Mama" and "Blue Moon Of Kentucky". And songs like "Sixteen Tons" were being replaced by others like "See You Later, Alligator".

Growing up in the mountains of Western North Carolina gave me deep rich roots in Country(called Hillbilly then..that was the name of the High School Annual), Bluegrass, Rhythm & Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Big Bands, and Sweet Bands.

I actually was "discovered" in late 1959 by a man who became my mentor and he brought me out to California in early 1960. When I was drafted in 1961, I was sent to the Presidio of San Francisco which is how I broke into San Francisco radio in 1962. I became a rock jock and was on the air during both the Kennedy Assassination and the Beatle Invasion.

In the following years, I learned how wonderful and how terrible being in broadcasting can be but along the way, met and interviewed some very interesting people including Sinatra.

There has been some real tragedy in my life including losing our daughter. Jack Daniels was also my co-producer for quite a few years.

My wife and I were married for 12 years, divorced for 3, and remarried in 1980 and we are still together. Our son was born in 1968 and he may show up here occasionally

From time to time, I will share some stories and interviews from what was mostly a magic time.

No matter how much you love people and how much they love you, there are just simply places and things you have to go through alone. Sometimes, the music is the only candle that lights that darkness.

Along the way, there have been a few awards mostly for P.R. Anybody can buy a plaque.

There were a few which I will talk about that have some meaning.

But all in all, this is a place to explore great music, reflect on how scary the world has become, and be able to laugh at much of it.

I also live on the Oregon Coast where the Rogue River meets the Pacific Ocean. The plan is to share a lot of that beauty.

Thanks,
Ron Lyons
